I’m home! Wasn’t feeling motivated to work on anything normal so I switched things up and did a lasso painting—no brushwork here.
Sorry, I won’t have much time for drawing/painting for the next little while! I’m visiting relatives in Washington DC right now. We went to the National Gallery today and I experienced a huge art-related high—seeing slides is all very well, but standing in front of a John Singer Sargent is a very special experience indeed. There were also some real, live Chuck Close originals, and a bunch of Rembrandts (people aren’t kidding about the light-on-dark thing) as well as a special exhibit of the Pre-Raphaelites’ work. I swear, Dante Gabriel Rosetti didn’t paint anyone except Jane Burden-Morris. And William Morris did well to abandon painting in favour of handicraft.
New WIP! If I ever finish it… might take a long break. I got a new monitor recently and it’s amazing and beautiful but everything I paint on it looks really washed out on my laptop’s screen. Probably my laptop is the problem but it makes me paranoid??? because there’s no way of knowing what anyone else is seeing.
Magic is easy, but being a witch is hard*—especially for this young lady, who according to most of her peers and many of her superiors isn’t “properly” female.
*Shameless borrowing, but you get bonus points if you recognize it.
WIP! I finally have my tablet pen back. Flipping shit horizontally is educational but also horrifying.
Intro paint final—a wall-mounted still life we composed ourselves, in my case from paper and dollar-store Easter decorations. My sister took one look at it and went “but there’s no content!”
More painting work—oil and acrylic. I should take the chance to warn anyone listening that this blog is likely to become more chatty and less all-serious-all-the-time soon. I’ll start a “real” art-only blog if it becomes an issue, ‘kay? It should mostly just mean reblogs happen sometimes.
A repro project from intro Paint, in acrylic. I won’t show you the original, but I will take a moment to sing the praises of Jenny Saville’s paint handling, if not her subject matter. This is my favourite image of hers, for reasons of colour theory (it’s much more intense in better reproductions); it’s amazing how hard it is to find her stuff online. Oh, and this is also a good example, better documented.
My final’s going to go up soon; it’s sweetness and light compared to this.
More school stuff—character illustration. Doing scenery became oddly soothing by the end of this. Much happier with the oh, the colour depth (?) in this one than what showed in the final print. But that’s printing for you.
I sure hope you saw this coming. Set 3/3. I abstracted the violence too much, or so I’m told (or I should have made the shift obvious by inverting my colour scheme or something). Not sure how to feel ‘bout that.
I like these two. They work better together than any of the others do, I think (especially the next set). It helps that that lower one is quite probably the strongest in the entire series.
Gonna post these two at a time ‘cause I’m a butt (don’t worry, there are only six). I so, so, so regret trying to work at 11x17” print resolution, even though it was the right choice. In Which Mr. Wolf Goes To ??? and the Story Remains Less Than Sinister, Despite A Panelling Faux Pas
Preview/WIP of one of my finals; I feel like I learned a lot from Intro Painting this semester. Also: I love these brushes oh my god.
I downloaded a brush pack the other day and I was going to work on finals but then I got all excited about doodling with it. Trees are soothing, yanno?
We traded prompts with our classmates and then produced a single image based on them. Mine was pretty straightforward. I think I need to start making time/energy for personal artwork. The characters aren’t mine, obviously.
Aww, it thinks it’s people.

Envy, redo of an old piece!
Lately I’ve hit a kind of art block. Been unhappy with my style and my backgrounds are lacking. So I decided to do something that’s all background.
